Briefing 2024

Initial situation

In the industrial environment, it has been becoming increasingly important to be able to manufacture products as individually as possible. This has led to an increasing demand for flexible manufacturing methods such as additive manufacturing (AM). Additive manufacturing – often referred to as 3D printing – is a process in which materials such as plastics, synthetic resins, ceramics or metals are applied layer by layer to produce three-dimensional objects. These can be initial models and prototypes as well as products that are already being manufactured in small, medium and large series.

One of the biggest advantages of additive manufacturing is the great design freedom it offers. It can be used to construct complex shapes that are difficult or impossible to produce with other machines. In addition, the ability to use materials in different ways and to go directly from CAD design to the finished product means that it can save resources and shorten the time to market for new products.

Our challenge

The implementation of additive manufacturing can take several hours, especially in an industrial environment. However, as nobody has the resources to stand in front of the machines for so long to continuously monitor the quality of the processes, errors can naturally creep in during this period. These then usually lead to unexpected additional costs for the producer.

Despite this fact, there are still hardly any industrial printers that have automated production error detection. We would like to change this situation.

Our task

We invite you to develop a new solution with us that uses a permanently installed camera system, a smart image recognition process and the use of artificial intelligence to enable automatic error detection during additive manufacturing and send a corresponding early warning to the production team.

During the innovation process, we can support you with our AM expertise as well as access to our production infrastructure and relevant stakeholders from the industry.

We are therefore primarily looking for innovative thinkers and makers with an interest and expertise in the fields of camera technology, image recognition and artificial intelligence who are keen to take on this forward-looking task with us.
