The initial situation

The growing concern about the increase in carbon emissions and the resulting global warming requires action in all sectors. The electronics industry is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.

The available tools usually offer simple and inaccurate carbon footprint calculations due to a lack of information, because electronic devices are usually complex, consist of a large number of components and the data on these devices is often incomplete or difficult to access. In addition, there are inconsistencies in the methods used to calculate carbon emissions.

Our challenge

We invite you to join us in the "Sparkling Science" program supported by the Federal Ministry of Education, Research and Science and the OEAD in the "Recycling Heroes" project to tinker with innovative future models that will help us improve the current situation. The project focuses on calculating the carbon footprint of electronic devices and participants are invited to consider new methods, product designs or production processes to reduce it.

Here are some ideas on what could be developed:

  • An app or website that makes it possible to calculate the carbon footprint of electronic devices from production and use to disposal – i.e. over the entire life cycle of the device. The aim would be to create a user-friendly tool that raises awareness and encourages consumers to make more sustainable choices.

  • An app that allows users to calculate their personal carbon footprint based on the specific electronic devices they own and how they use them. The app could ask questions about usage habits, device types and energy sources to provide a customized carbon footprint estimate.

  • A feature within the app that allows users to compare the carbon footprint of different electronic products before purchasing. This could be based on data collected from manufacturers, independent audits or user reviews to enable an informed decision.

  • An app that helps users to set and track targets for reducing their carbon footprint. This could be supported by suggestions for more efficient usage patterns, reminders to switch off devices or tips for saving energy.

The shortening of delivery routes and suggestion of nearby manufacturers reduces the environmental impact and contributes to increasing local value creation. All in all, an intelligent software solution from Austria that takes European electronics production to the next level.
